The Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued a substantial volume of small-format gold coins since the early 2000s, primarily targeting the collector and gift market rather than domestic circulation. Most are produced under contract by European mints — Switzerland's Argor-Heraeus being the most commonly associated facility — with the DRC lending its issuing authority to pieces that will never see Congolese soil.
At 0.5 g of .9999 fine gold, the economics are straightforward: bullion premium dominates entirely.
