Niger's "Sonic Boom" issue belongs to a wave of small-format gold novelty pieces produced for the collector market by African franc zone nations in the 2010s — countries whose monetary policy is governed by the BCEAO and whose coin programs are largely contracted to European minting houses with little domestic involvement. These pieces are legal tender in name only, sized and priced for the bullion-collector crossover market rather than any transactional use.
