The Semperoper in Dresden, destroyed by Allied bombing in February 1945 and left as rubble through most of the East German period, was finally reconstructed and reopened in 1985 — a restoration that took forty years and became one of the most politically charged cultural projects in GDR history. Its appearance on a Congolese fractional gold issue is purely a product of the modern bullion-souvenir market, where the DRC's mint authority has become a reliable vehicle for European-themed collector pieces with no geographic connection to the issuer.
