Niger's micro-gold series, produced for the collector market through European distributors, has no connection to domestic circulation or monetary policy. These pieces are struck to order by private minting facilities and exported almost entirely to European and North American collectors. The Santiago de Compostela subject references the Galician cathedral consecrated in 1211, one of the principal pilgrimage destinations of medieval Christendom, though Niger's choice of it is purely commercial.
