| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of the Congo occupies the central field, depicting a leopard's head facing front, flanked by a crossed elephant tusk and a spear, set upon a decorative base inscribed with the motto PAIX at center, JUSTICE on the left arm and TRAVAIL on the right arm. The date 2013 is divided to either side of the base, with 20 at left and 13 at right. The Democratic Republic of Congo has issued a steady stream of small-format gold bullion pieces under wildlife themes since the early 2010s, primarily aimed at the collector and gift market rather than any circulating monetary function. The 0.5g size places it in a category pioneered largely by the Perth Mint and later adopted by numerous African issuing authorities working with European minting houses — most Congo-branded pieces of this type were struck by B.H. Mayer's Kunstprägeanstalt in Munich.
The black rhinoceros, native to central and eastern Africa, had already been declared functionally extinct in the DRC by the time this coin was issued.
