The Red Fort in Delhi, commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and completed in 1648, served as the seat of Mughal power until the British exiled the last emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar II, following the 1857 uprising. Niger's long-running series of miniature gold issues — fractional pieces aimed squarely at the collector bullion market — has drawn from world heritage sites with little geographic connection to the issuing country, a practice common among West African CFA franc states that mint primarily for export revenue rather than domestic circulation.
