| Beschrijving voorzijde | Depiction of the Knight Malizia disguised as a monk, rendered in high relief at center, mounted on a galloping horse and bearing arms, with the shield displaying the Grimaldi lozenge motif. The figure faces right and is shown in full medieval armor beneath a monastic habit. The legend 'DYNASTIE DES GRIMALDI' arcs around the upper periphery of the field, referencing the founding legend of the Grimaldi dynasty's capture of Monaco in 1297. |

The 1997 issue marked the 700th anniversary of Grimaldi rule in Monaco, dating the dynasty's founding to François Grimaldi's seizure of the fortress rock in 1297 — famously accomplished by disguising himself as a Franciscan monk. Rainier III, who reigned from 1949 until his death in 2005, was the 30th ruling prince of that line.
Struck at the Monnaie de Paris under the terms of Monaco's longstanding monetary agreement with France, which governed Monégasque coinage rights throughout the franc period until euro adoption in 2002.
