Essais struck for Monaco in this period were produced in very limited quantities — typically fewer than 500 pieces — for submission to the Monegasque monetary authority and select distribution to collectors and officials. Rainier III had assumed the throne only in 1949 following the death of Louis II, and the 1950 coinage program represented the new prince's first substantive effort to establish a distinct numismatic identity for the principality.
