Madagascar gained independence in June 1960, but the monetary transition lagged behind the political one. This note is a stopgap: an existing Banque de France–produced 100 Francs note for the Institut d'Émission des États de l'Afrique Équatoriale et du Cameroun overprinted with the Institut d'Émission Malgache authority to cover the gap before purpose-designed Malagasy issues could be produced and distributed.
Beltrand was one of the Banque de France's most accomplished intaglio engravers of the postwar period, responsible for obverse work across numerous French colonial issues. Dubreuil handled the reverse.
