The legend REPUBLIQUE • DU • MALI arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination FRS.100 appears in the lower central field. The motto UN PEUPLE • UN BUT • UNE FOI (One People, One Goal, One Faith) curves along the lower border, with a small five-pointed star at each side of the field. |

Mali issued this coin in 1967 under extraordinary circumstances: the country had withdrawn from the West African CFA franc zone in 1962, establishing its own currency under Keita's socialist government in a direct repudiation of French monetary influence. The gold coinage that followed was produced largely for international prestige and hard currency purposes rather than domestic circulation, as the Malian franc itself struggled badly against convertible currencies throughout the 1960s.
Keita was deposed in a military coup in November 1968, less than two years after this piece was struck.
