The Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued bullion and commemorative gold coinage under its own authority since the post-Mobutu reorganization of 1997, when Laurent-Désiré Kabila renamed the country and restructured its monetary institutions. These issues are produced under contract by foreign mints — primarily European — rather than struck domestically, as the DRC operates no functioning precious-metal mint of its own.
