The Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale issues collector coinage under the authority of the six-nation CEMAC monetary union — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon — none of which have any geographical or historical connection to Notre-Dame de Paris. These pieces are produced entirely for the international numismatic market, commissioned through private minting programs rather than reflecting any domestic monetary need.
Notre-Dame's April 2019 fire, which destroyed the spire and most of the roof, and the cathedral's subsequent reopening in December 2024, provided the commercial hook for this release.
