The dates 1915 and 1965 flank the portrait at mid-level, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the king's reign. Burundi gained independence from Belgian administration in July 1962, and Mwambutsa IV — who had ruled since 1915 — became head of state of the new nation. The 1965 commemorative issue marking his 50th year of reign was produced during one of the most politically unstable periods in the country's short history: an October 1965 coup attempt against the monarchy had just failed, and Mwambutsa himself would flee the country the following year, never to return.
The KM#10 is part of a matched gold proof set issued alongside lower-denomination commemoratives. Mwambutsa was formally deposed in absentia by his son Ntare V in July 1966.
