This 1831 pattern was produced in the turbulent early months of the July Monarchy, when Louis-Philippe's government was still negotiating the terms of a new coinage system. Pattern strikings in bronze were routine for denominations under consideration — they allowed the Monnaie de Paris to submit proposals for official review without committing to gold or silver. The 100 francs denomination was never adopted for circulation under Louis-Philippe; no regular-issue gold 100 francs piece entered production during his reign.
