Obverse description The obverse features a high-relief adaptation of Eugène Delacroix's celebrated painting 'Liberty Leading the People,' depicting the allegorical figure of Liberty as a bare-shouldered woman striding forward, her right arm raised aloft brandishing a large tricolor flag while her left hand grasps a musket with fixed bayonet. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap and a loosely draped classical garment that falls from her shoulders. The monogram 'RF' (République Française) appears prominently in the left field. The curved legend 'LA LIBERTÉ GUIDANT LE PEUPLE' arcs along the right portion of the field, rendered in raised lettering against the deeply mirrored proof surface.
