| Reverse description | A finely modelled draped bust of President Hamani Diori is portrayed in three-quarter facing view, his head turned slightly to the left, wearing spectacles and a suit jacket. The effigy fills the central field with strong sculptural relief. The encircling legend reads PRESIDENT DIORI HAMANI along the upper arc, separated by raised bullet stops, and REPUBLIQUE DU NIGER along the lower arc. |

| Additional information |
Niger's independence from France was proclaimed on August 3, 1960, and this commemorative was among a small group of West African gold issues struck almost immediately to mark the transition. The series was produced by the Paris Mint under contract — a quietly ironic arrangement given the political circumstances — and distributed primarily as presentation pieces rather than circulating currency.
Mintage was extremely low, likely in the hundreds rather than thousands.
