The Îles des Saintes — a cluster of small islands off Guadeloupe's southern coast — were the site of the 1782 Battle of the Saintes, one of the most tactically significant naval engagements of the Age of Sail. Rodney's British fleet defeated de Grasse there partly through the then-unconventional maneuver of breaking the French line, a tactic that would later be credited as a forerunner of Nelson's approach at Trafalgar.
This piece is a local collector issue rather than circulating currency — France's official tender in Guadeloupe is the euro, and has been since 2002.
