Guinea's 1971 coinage was issued under Sékou Touré's increasingly authoritarian one-party state, three years after the country had severed ties with the French franc zone entirely and introduced its own non-convertible syли — the Guinean franc — which was systematically overvalued by government decree. The isolation that followed made imported goods scarce and official exchange rates largely fictional.
By the mid-1970s, a thriving parallel currency market had rendered much of the official coinage economically marginal before it had barely circulated.
