This piece belongs to a short series commissioned by the French government to mark the bicentennial of the Revolution, with 1988 falling one year ahead of the 1989 anniversary proper — Monnaie de Paris staggered the releases across several years rather than flooding the market in a single commemorative cycle. The fraternity theme was the last of the three to be issued, following liberty and equality.
The .920 fineness is a deliberate nod to pre-metric French gold standards rather than the more convenient .999 used in bullion issues of the same period.
