The three-word Republican motto LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ is distributed among the branches of the tree. The date 1988 and the engraver's name DURAND-MEGRET appear in the lower portion of the design. The word PIEDFORT is inscribed to the left of the scroll, identifying the double-thickness striking of this special issue. |

The Fraternité piéfort series was part of a broader Monnaie de Paris program issuing piedfort strikes in gold, silver, and platinum for collector markets during the 1980s. Piedforts in platinum at this weight are among the most demanding production pieces the Paris mint undertook — 62 grams of .9999 fine metal requires significant die pressure adjustments to achieve full relief on a doubled-thickness planchet without cracking or flow failure.
The 1988 date places this within the run-up to the French Bicentennial, when the Monnaie de Paris was ramping output of prestige issues ahead of 1989 commemorative demand. Platinum piedforts from this series were produced in extremely limited quantities, often fewer than a few hundred pieces.
