Piéforts are struck at double the standard flan thickness and have long served as presentation pieces for the Monnaie de Paris — proof of die quality and institutional prestige rather than objects of commerce. This platinum example from the 1985 Zola commemorative series sits at the extreme end of that tradition: .999 fine platinum at 62 grams is a significant mass for a coin of this diameter, producing a piece of exceptional heft relative to its face.
Zola died in 1902 under circumstances still disputed — the chimney of his Paris apartment was found blocked, possibly deliberately, leading to carbon monoxide poisoning. He had been rehabilitated politically only four years earlier following the Dreyfus affair.
