Niger has issued a long-running series of miniature gold pieces bearing famous architectural subjects, with the Dresden Zwinger appearing among several European landmarks licensed for the program. The Zwinger itself was commissioned by Augustus the Strong of Saxony in the early 18th century, built not as a fortress despite its name but as an orangery and festival ground — a distinction that still surprises visitors today.
