The Colossus of Rhodes stood at the entrance to Mandraki harbour for roughly 54 years before an earthquake in 226 BC toppled it. The Ptolemaic Egyptians offered funds to rebuild it; the Rhodians declined, reportedly citing an oracle warning against reconstruction. The statue lay broken on the ground for nearly nine centuries before Arab traders reportedly sold the bronze as scrap in 654 AD.
