Additional information

Issued as part of France's long-running commemorative silver program, this piece marks the 1,500th anniversary of the baptism of Clovis I — the Frankish king whose conversion to Nicene Christianity in 496 AD aligned the nascent Frankish kingdom with Rome rather than the Arian heresy favored by rival Germanic powers. That political and religious calculation shaped the trajectory of Catholic Europe for centuries.

The Monnaie de Paris struck this under the authority of a 1992 law expanding the commemorative coinage program. GEM 246.3 confirms the business strike variant; a Proof issue was produced simultaneously for collectors.
