This piece was issued to commemorate John Paul II's January 1985 apostolic visit to Thailand — one stop on a six-nation Asian tour that also included Togo, Ivory Coast itself, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic earlier in his pontificate. The Ivory Coast connection to papal commemoratives is largely commercial; the country's franc CFA issues from this period were produced almost entirely for the collector market by external minting houses, not for domestic circulation.
Silver-plated copper-nickel on a 25g flan was the house standard for this entire program, and surviving examples typically retain full plate.
