Additional information

Richard von Weizsäcker, West Germany's president from 1984 to 1994, is best remembered for his May 1985 Bundestag speech in which he described the anniversary of Germany's defeat not as a day of defeat but of liberation — a position that was politically charged at the time and has since become the accepted German historical framing. His connection to Mali is nonexistent. This coin belongs to the sprawling category of sub-Saharan CFA-zone issues struck for the collector market, licensed to European bullion dealers and never intended for circulation in the issuing country.
