Togo has no particular historical or liturgical connection to John Paul II — this is a commemorative issued under the West African CFA franc framework purely for the collector market, a practice that accelerated sharply among BCEAO member states after 2000. The Vatican had no involvement in its authorization.
John Paul II died in April 2005, five years before this coin's issue date.
