The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus — built around 350 BC for the Satrap Mausoleus in what is now Bodrum, Turkey — gave the English language the word "mausoleum" and stood for roughly seventeen centuries before earthquakes reduced it to rubble. By the 15th century, the Knights of St. John were quarrying its stonework for Bodrum Castle. Ivory Coast has no historical connection to the site; this is one of dozens of Seven Wonders-themed bullion issues produced under West African CFA franc authority primarily for the collector export market, with the BCEAO lending its imprimatur to pieces designed and distributed almost entirely outside the region.
