The Republic of the Congo has issued a long-running series of miniature gold coins bearing portraits of historical European figures, produced almost entirely for the collector market rather than any domestic monetary purpose. Wilhelm II himself abdicated in November 1918 and died in exile at Huis Doorn in the Netherlands in 1941, never having set foot in Central Africa despite presiding over German colonial ambitions that included neighboring Cameroon and what is now Tanzania.
