The "Johannes" name references the historic Portuguese gold coin first struck in the early 18th century under João V, itself named after the monarch. Issuing a fractional gold piece under that name from Brazzaville is a curatorial oddity — the Republic of the Congo has no historical connection to Lusophone coinage, and these small-denomination CFA issues were produced explicitly for the bullion collectibles market rather than circulation.
