This piece belongs to a series of African Legal Tender miniature gold issues that replicate historical European coinage — in this case, the German Goldmark introduced by the German Empire in 1871 following unification and the indemnity windfall extracted from France after the Franco-Prussian War. That indemnity, five billion francs in gold, funded the new Reich's coinage reform and effectively placed Germany on the gold standard decades ahead of schedule.
Ivory Coast's role here is nominal — the legal tender status is a licensing arrangement, not a reflection of domestic monetary policy.
