The Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique Équatoriale et du Cameroun was itself a transitional institution — it replaced the earlier colonial-era currency arrangements and was subsequently absorbed into the Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale in 1972, just one year after this essai was struck. Pattern and trial pieces issued in the final months of a dissolving monetary authority rarely see further development, which likely explains why this gold essai never proceeded to circulation.
