Benin adopted the CFA franc as part of the West African Economic and Monetary Union, whose member states surrendered independent monetary policy to a shared central bank — the BCEAO — backed initially by France. Collector issues like this one fall outside that framework entirely, struck for the numismatic market rather than circulation, which explains the pure copper composition and the substantial weight at odds with any practical denomination.
The "first portrait" designation refers to the Gillick effigy of Elizabeth II, used on Commonwealth coinage from 1953 until the mid-1960s — six decades removed from this 2023 strike.
