| Additional information |
The Congo Peafowl (*Afropavo congensis*) wasn't confirmed to science until 1936, when James Chapin identified museum specimens that had been misidentified for decades as juvenile feathers of another species. Endemic to the dense rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo — not the issuing Republic of the Congo — its appearance on this coin reflects a broader regional wildlife series rather than a species with particular national significance to Brazzaville.
