Mother Teresa was canonized by Pope Francis on September 4, 2016, completing a process that had been accelerated under John Paul II, who waived the standard five-year waiting period after her death in 1997. Ivory Coast has no particular historical or ecclesiastical connection to her — this is one of dozens of small-format gold issues the country has licensed to European bullion minting operations targeting collector markets rather than domestic circulation.
