The Democratic Republic of Congo issued a wave of novelty bullion coinage in the early 2000s under the Banque Centrale du Congo, largely targeting the international collector market rather than domestic circulation. The country was emerging from the Second Congo War — one of the deadliest conflicts since World War II — and hard currency was effectively absent from everyday life. These issues were revenue instruments, not monetary tools.
KM#130 belongs to a butterfly series produced with colored enamel or foil inlay, a format pioneered by the Royal Canadian Mint and quickly licensed or imitated across numerous small issuing authorities in that decade.
