This piece is a licensed issue produced under arrangement with the Perth Mint, which originated the Australian Kangaroo bullion series in 1986. The Democratic Republic of Congo has issued a number of such licensed fantasy denominations — coins struck to Perth Mint specifications but carrying Congolese authority — primarily targeting the novelty collector market rather than any circulatory function. The "1 Tonne" denomination is a marketing fiction referencing the Perth Mint's actual one-tonne gold coin of 2011, the largest and highest-denomination gold coin ever produced.
