Albert I became King of the Belgians in December 1909, and the question of coinage language immediately became politically charged. Belgium's linguistic divide meant every new royal coin type required both a French and a Dutch version — or a unified Latin inscription to sidestep the issue entirely. This piece is a pattern submission from 1911, almost certainly produced at the Brussels mint as part of the design evaluation process that preceded any official issue. The bronze composition confirms it was struck for approval purposes rather than circulation.
No standard KM, Moreaux, or Lecompte-Atelier number has been assigned, placing it firmly in the undocumented pattern category.
