The BCEAO was established in 1959 as the successor to the Institut d'Émission de l'Afrique Occidentale Française et du Togo, inheriting both the currency zone and the basic note architecture of the colonial franc system. This 100 Francs issue spans the turbulent early independence years, and the changing left-hand signatures reflect exactly that — six different signatories across just four years as newly independent member states rotated their representatives on the board while Robert Julienne, the French-appointed director, held constant throughout.
