The Institut d'Émission de l'Afrique Occidentale Française et du Togo was created in 1955 specifically to separate the currency-issuing function from the Banque de l'Afrique Occidentale, a privately-held colonial bank that had held that monopoly since 1901. This note belongs to the brief transitional window before the CFA franc zone was restructured following independence — by 1959, the Institut itself had been superseded by successor institutions aligned with the newly sovereign states.

Clément Serveau was one of the most prolific designers working for French colonial note series in the mid-twentieth century, with credits across multiple AOF issues. The Banque de France produced the physical notes in Paris throughout the series' short run.
