This piece belongs to a short-lived French experiment in bimetallic commemorative policy: the dual-denomination franc/euro transitional series issued in the mid-1990s, intended to familiarize the French public with euro-denominated values before the currency's physical introduction in 2002. The face value of 15 euros was legally nominal — the franc remained sole legal tender — but the series established a direct conversion peg for collectors and skeptics alike.
The Magere Brug, Amsterdam's famous 18th-century drawbridge over the Amstel, was chosen as part of a broader European cities and monuments theme running through the series. KM#1156 is one of the lower-mintage entries in the run.
