Hungary qualified for the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain — their ninth appearance, and what would prove to be their last for decades. The tournament itself delivered one of the most lopsided results in World Cup history when Hungary defeated El Salvador 10–1, still a record margin of victory. They were eliminated in the first round nonetheless, a result that sharpened the irony of a commemorative issue struck with such apparent national confidence.
The Hungarian Mint issued this piece as part of a broader wave of socialist-era sports commemoratives, a genre Budapest produced prolifically throughout the 1970s and 80s for both domestic circulation and the foreign collector market.
