Obverse description Right-facing bust of Ignác Semmelweis (1818–1865), the Hungarian physician celebrated as the 'Saviour of Mothers' for his pioneering work in antiseptic procedures, rendered in high relief with fine portrait detail. The legend MAGYAR NÉPKÖZTÁRSASÁG (Hungarian People's Republic) arcs along the upper periphery, while SEMMELWEIS and the birth and death dates 1818–1865 appear in the field. The engraver's name REMÉNYI is inscribed in the lower field. The portrait is executed in a naturalistic, medallic style characteristic of mid-20th century Hungarian commemorative coinage.
