Hungary's 1988 commemorative was struck well ahead of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, part of a broad international wave of pre-tournament issues that flooded collector markets in the late 1980s. Hungary had qualified for and competed in ten World Cups by that point, including a remarkable run to the final in 1938 and 1954, but would fail to qualify for Italia '90 altogether — an irony the mint could not have anticipated when the dies were cut.
