Kuwait's silver coinage circulated alongside base-metal versions of the same denominations for decades, the two differentiated only by composition — a practical distinction that confused casual users and delighted hoarders. The 1990 Iraqi invasion and subsequent looting of Kuwaiti banks and businesses sent enormous quantities of everyday coinage out of the country, and post-liberation restrike programs in the early 1990s replenished circulation stocks, complicating date-by-date mintage analysis considerably.
