Bahrain hosted its inaugural Formula One Grand Prix in April 2004, making it the first Middle Eastern country to hold a round of the FIA World Championship. The race at Sakhir prompted a small commemorative circulation issue — unusual for a country that rarely used its coinage as a vehicle for event marking. Michael Schumacher won that first race.
