Bahrain's bimetallic coinage was introduced following the country's 2002 transition from an emirate to a kingdom under Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, prompting a redesign of the circulating series that distinguished his reign from his father's. The "2nd type" designation reflects a modification to the royal titulature on the coin, updated after the constitutional changes solidified the new monarchical nomenclature.
The fils denominations have remained pegged in practical terms to the Bahraini dinar at its long-standing fixed rate against the US dollar — a rate unchanged since 1987 — giving these coins unusual monetary stability for the region.
