Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse features a finely detailed high-relief portrait of a wild boar (Sus scrofa) facing left, its coarse bristled coat rendered with exceptional engraving precision. The animal emerges from a naturalistic foreground of tall grasses and ornate arabesque scrollwork, with oak leaves and acorns depicted in the lower right field. The legend REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH arcs along the upper rim, with the date 2014 positioned to the right, while the denomination 100 EURO is inscribed in two lines to the lower left of the central motif.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents an atmospheric woodland scene rendered in deeply sculpted high relief, depicting an adult wild boar sow standing protectively over two resting piglets among the roots and trunks of a dense forest. The engraving captures fine naturalistic detail throughout, including the texture of bark, ferns, and the animals' bristled coats. A badger is visible to the right in the middle ground, adding further depth to the wildlife composition. The unlettered field is framed by a plain raised rim, allowing the intricate pictorial design to fill the entire coin surface.

Aanvullende informatie

Austria's "Animals of the Alps" bullion series launched in 2014 as a direct competitor to established wildlife gold programs from Perth and the Royal Canadian Mint. The wild boar was the inaugural subject, setting the series format that would continue with chamois, golden eagle, and others in subsequent years. Münze Österreich struck these in .986 fineness — marginally purer than the .9999 standard adopted by most modern bullion programs, a deliberate callback to the traditional Vienna fineness used in historical Austrian gold coinage.
