Austria's Philharmonic program launched in 1989 as a direct response to the dominance of the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf in the bullion market — Münze Österreich needed a competitive product denominated in a European currency. The original face value was 2,000 Schillings; when Austria adopted the euro in 2002, the denomination converted to 100 euros, which is where this date range begins. The coin has since become consistently one of the top three best-selling gold bullion coins worldwide by annual volume.
The .9999 fineness was a deliberate marketing decision, fractionally purer than the Krugerrand's .9167, targeting buyers who equated higher purity with premium value.
