Additional information

This piece belongs to the Monnaie de Paris series issued for the bicentennial of Napoléon's death on Saint Helena, May 5, 1821. The French state's decision to commemorate him officially was not without friction — debates in the Assemblée nationale over whether public funds should honor a figure responsible for reinstating slavery in the colonies delayed and complicated the broader commemorative program.

The .900 silver standard mirrors the alloy used for French coinage under the Consulate and First Empire itself.
